Spent March Break in the Florida Keys, camping at Bahia Honda State Park, paddling a variety of launches from Pennekamp SP on Key Largo to the Rte. 1 ramp off Shark Channel east of Boca Chica.
Eight days and 88 nautical miles on 73 degree water, longest paddle 16 n.m.
Goal was to explore some of the islands along the Gulf reef, Mud Keys to Snipe Point, Sawyer Keys and Content Keys.
On each there were beautiful remote sandy pocket beaches tucked inside the reef, just the spots for a quiet lunch and a nice swim. Saw lots of rays and loggerhead turtles, a few different sharks, tarpon and grouper, as well as ibis and egrets and herons, sanderlings and terns, harriers, osprey, a frigate bird and a bald eagle.
At times on the trips down and back I questioned the 25 hour drive, but once there, all doubts vanished. Nice way to exchange the cold of winter for an early taste of summer.
